The original Edison Elementary building was the oldest operating building in the School District, on a property less than half the size of a standard elementary school. Placing the new building in a manner respectful to the surrounding residential neighborhood while fulfilling the programmatic planning inside and out. The covered play area is located under the second floor, the stage folds up against the wall in the gymnasium, and what would otherwise be wasted space or awkward nooks between chases doubles as extra storage. The school design pays homage to the original building while facilitating hands-on learning, large and small group learning, high visibility to all areas for supervision, and connection to nature from almost every space. RSA collaborated with Mahlum Architects for the design of this project.
