Hillsboro Aquatic Center

Hillsboro aquatic center

The Hillsboro Aquatic Center, originally constructed in 1980, had by 2005 developed serious physical deficiencies, which threatened the continued operation of the facility. Studies indicated that the condition of the existing building envelope, the pool water treatment, heating and circulation systems, and the building’s ventilating systems were all at or near failure. In addition, the public’s aquatic and recreational needs had changed, suggesting an expansion of aquatics facilities and that existing programs such as racquetball be replaced with new programs such as aerobics and cardio fitness rooms. Based on the findings of these studies, RSA recommended that a set of significant repairs and additions be undertaken. The renovation and expansion transformed an outdated and poorly functioning natatorium into a modern aquatic and fitness facility offering a broad range of recreational amenities. The result is a 16,000 square foot addition and complete renovation of the existing building. A key architectural gesture is the introduction of a new entrance facade and lobby that serves to visually tie the disparate program elements together while serving to help unify the original and new construction. The curving fascia outlines the canopy and graciously directs visitors to the new entrance. Once inside, the entry opens into the newly renovated lobby space that provides visitors with an at-a-glance view of the now state-of-the-art natatorium pools.
